As a proud tribute to the marque’s 1-2 class finish in the 1954 edition of the gruelling Carrera Panamericana endurance road race, Porsche christened its Type 547/1 motor “Carrera”. Built around the block found in the 550 Spyder competition car, the sophisticated air-cooled flat-four unit featured four camshafts to duly go down in history as one of the great engines. Correspondence with Porsche Classic shows that the GT Speedster offered here, chassis 83607, left the factory on 12 July 1957. The bodywork by Reutter was finished in Silver Metallic to complement a Red leather interior, while the original engine number is listed as 90836. The Kardex sheet records that this 356 A was delivered to Gersteinmair of Baden-Baden, Germany. Thereafter, the car was destined to spend the next years of its life in America. It eventually moved to Michigan before, starting in 1982, a spell in Champaign, Illinois. Chassis 83607 joined The Aumann Collection in June 1991 from Westport Motors of St. Louis, Missouri. Having subsequently returned the car home to its native Germany via air freight from Chicago to Frankfurt, extensive restoration work was commissioned. At the time of purchase, the car was supplied with a dismantled Type 547/1 Carrera engine numbered 90067, which was installed during the rebuild, alongside the fitment of a new interior and wiring harness. The car was registered back on the road in September 1994. Later maintenance included an engine rebuild and an overhaul of the braking system in August 2000 before a new carburettor was equipped in work totalling 17,875 Deutsche Mark. More recently, this car was tended to by renowned Porsche engineer Karl Holch, who enlarged the capacity of the Carrera engine to 1,750-cc in March 2013 at a cost of €21,952. Accompanied by a history file, Speedster tonneau cover, spare wheel, and tool roll, this example of a high sought-after ‘Four-Cam’ GS/GT Speedster would make for an exquisite addition to any collection.
